Ringed Seal Research Results 2014 Tagging

Results from the Summer of 2014:

In July 2014, the NSB DWM began capturing ringed seals, under NMFS Permit #15324, using monofilament gill nets along the ice edge during breakup and using dip nets to catch animals resting on ice flows and beaches. Length, girth and weight measurements are taken, as well as blood samples for health assessment. We will continue to send maps throughout the season until the tags stop transmitting. Please feel free to contact Andy if you have any questions or comments.

February 27, 2015

The attached maps show the most recent locations of all seals tagged in 2014 (as of 27-Feb) near Barrow, AK. For convenience I have zoomed in on the latest locations. Previous versions of these maps show the extent of each seal’s travels. Another map has been added that shows all seal haul-out locations to date. These are indicated by flipper tags, which only transmit when they are out of the water. Note that the straight lines on this map are not important. Rather, the endpoints of the lines indicate the actual haul-out locations. Finally, the last map superimposes all seal movements to show the extent of their travels to date.

October 18, 2014

The attached maps show the most recent locations of all seals tagged in 2014 (as of 18-Oct) near Barrow, AK. A recent transmission from a flipper tag indicates that spotted seal #5 is still alive. Why this seal’s head mounted satellite tag stopped transmitting is unknown. I’m hopeful that the other spotted seal that had stopped transmitting (#1) will also send us its location via flipper tag one of these days. It is interesting to see that ringed seal #1 has been hauling out down in Norton Sound this past week, and also noteworthy that ringed seal #2 has not really wandered much from its present location for several weeks.

The attached maps show the most recent locations of all seals tagged in 2014. We’ve been fortunate to tag 8 spotted seals this week! Because there are many overlapping satellite tracks, Andy has split up the seal satellite data into a series of smaller maps that are easier to read.

August 18, 2014

The attached maps show the most recent locations of all seals tagged in 2014. Last week we were unable to capture and tag any seals due to poor weather. All satellite tags on the four seals caught this season are functioning well. The updated map below shows their locations as of Sunday (17-Aug, 2014). Both spotted seals are now hanging out in Kasegaluk Lagoon between Icy Cape and Point Lay. Ringed seal #1 travelled almost 300 miles due north to the ice edge, and ringed seal #2 is now in Peard Bay to the NE of Wainwright.

August 8, 2014

The attached maps show the most recent locations of all seals tagged in 2014. This week we were unable to capture and tag any seals due to poor weather. All satellite tags on the four seals caught this season are functioning well and an updated map of their locations as of today has been added. The spotted seals both covered a lot of territory this week. Ringed seal #2 (blue line on the map) is interesting because it has ventured well beyond the continental shelf.
