Sitka Whalefest
2010 Sitka Whalefest:
In November of 2010, two Hopson Middle School (HMS) students, Shelbi Matthews and Lynette Ahsoak, and their science teacher Deb Greene, traveled to Sitka, Alaska, to attend the Sitka Whalefest and the Scientists-in-the-Schools program. Craig George was providing an educational presentation at the Sitka schools on photogrammetry (estimating fluke length of bowhead whales from a photograph) and the HMS students were able to participate. Cyd Hanns chaperoned the students with Deb. Ilisagvik College student Ernest Nageak also attended receiving Seminar credit form UAS for particiapting in the Whalefest Seminar discussions. Students also went on a whale watching tour associated with the Whalefest which included many scientists aboard to help spot the whales!
2011 Sitka Whalefest:
In November of 2011, four HMS students, Stacey Davis, Justin Ferris, Kevin Goodwin, and Brandon Gueco, traveled with Deb Greene, Cyd Hanns, Craig George, and Leslie Pierce to Sitka to attend the 2011 Sitka Whalefest. NSB-DWM Wildlife Intern and Dartmouth college student, Nicole Kanayurak, also attended the Whalefest, receiving Seminar credit from UAS for the Discussion group and also taking a short course in Molecular Biology Techniques. The HMS students participated in the Scientists-in-the-Schools program as well as the Whalefest.
