Kaktovik Water Incident Management Team
Operational Update
The Do Not Drink the Water notice remains in effect until officially lifted. Kaktovik residents should continue using an alternative source of water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making Ice, and other activities Involving consumption.
Six water samples were collected on September 14 with laboratory reported results on September 23. The samples were collected from the North and South tanks, both North and South distribution loop returns, the nanofiltration system, and a water delivery truck. No ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, or triethylene glycol were detected in any of these samples.
The laboratory’s detection limit was 3 milligrams per liter for each of the four glycols. “Not detected” means a glycol was not detected above that limit in the sample tested. These results are encouraging, but the Do Not Drink the Water notice remains in place.
Refilling of the North Tank through the pipeline from the lake continues as weather conditions permit. To date, approximately 276,000 gallons of water have been stored in the North Tank.
The Incident Management Team continues to evaluate the laboratory results and the water system in coordination with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
