The NSB-DWM conducted a Polar Bear Cub Naming Contest at the request of the Toledo Zoo. They had a polar bear cub born on December 3, 2009. North Slope Borough students submitted names and three finalists and a winning name were chosen.
Participating students from Ms. Andrea Opitz’ 5th grade class at Ipalook Elementary, Barrow, Alaska
The three finalists were:
- Siku (ice in Inupiat) from Isaiah Rexford, Jill Exe’s 4th grade class, Harold Kaveolook School, Kaktovik.
- Paaka (name of polar bear in movie Snow Bear) from Andrea Brower, Mae Ahgeak’s Preschool (K4) class Ipalook Elementary, Barrow.
- Qannik (snowflake in Inupiat) from Allison Heaston, Nycki Saxton’s Preschool (K4) class Ipalook Elementary, Barrow.
All 81 participating students received prizes donated by Toledo Zoo and World Wildlife Fund and Polar Bears International. In addition, Isaiah and his family received a $500 gift certificate and the Harold Kaveolook school library received $500. All three finalists will also receive down coats courtesy of Polar Bears International. The NSB sent Isaiah and his father to the Toledo Zoo for the presentation of the cub to the public in May 2010. Thank you very much to all of the students who participated in the Polar Bear Cub naming contest.
Contest winner Isaiah and his father, Fenton Rexford, are interviewed on the Toledo TV news channel
