Polar Bear Art Contest

The NSB Department of Wildlife Management and World Wildlife Fund held a polar bear information and art contest night on Friday, September 11, 2009. The contest was open to all school age children in the North Slope Borough. Over 200 entries were received. The winners came from six North Slope villages. The night included presentations on polar bear conservation and a polar bear drawing clinic, taught by Dr. Todd Sherman, art professor from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Over $4,000 in door prizes and contest prizes were given away. Everyone had a great time! Winners include:

Polar Bear Cub Naming Contest

The NSB-DWM conducted a Polar Bear Cub Naming Contest at the request of the Toledo Zoo. They had a polar bear cub born on December 3, 2009. North Slope Borough students submitted names and three finalists and a winning name were chosen.

The three finalists were:
Siku (ice in Inupiat) from Isaiah Rexford, Jill Exe’s 4th grade class, Harold Kaveolook School, Kaktovik
Paaka (name of polar bear in movie Snow Bear) from Andrea Brower, Mae Ahgeak’s Preschool (K4) class Ipalook Elementary, Barrow
Qannik (snowflake in Inupiat) from Allison Heaston, Nycki Saxton’s Preschool (K4) class Ipalook Elementary, Barrow

All 81 participating students received prizes donated by Toledo Zoo and World Wildlife Fund and Polar Bears International. In addition, Isaiah and his family received a $500 gift certificate and the Harold Kaveolook school library received $500. All three finalists will also receive down coats courtesy of Polar Bears International.  The NSB sent Isaiah and his father to the Toledo Zoo for the presentation of the cub to the public in May 2010. Thank you very much to all of the students who participated in the Polar Bear Cub naming contest.
